Topic: Ayaan Hirsi Ali interview from BookTV
Ayaan Hirsi Ali was born in Somalia and lived in Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and Kenya. She left her family to flee an arranged marriage to go to the Netherlands. She learned Dutch, received a university degree, and became a member of the Dutch Parliament. Since then, she has immigrated to the U.S. to work for the American Enterprise Institute. She has become a prominent critic of the Islamic religion and culture. She appeared on BookTV to promote her recent book, Nomad. We will watch a DVD recording of the interview.
Directions From Aberdeen: Get Route 22 (Churchville Road) west. Continue on Route 22 west past Route 155 and Route 136. Continue on Route 22 past Toy Drive (on left), Rockdale Ave (on left), and Bramble Lane (on right). UUFHC is on the left right after the intersection of Route 22 and Ashbury Road (on left) / Rhineforte Drive (on right). There is a sign next to the drive with an intermingled UU. If you see the gas station and the Arena Club entrance on the right, you have gone too far and need to turn around.
From Bel Air:
Get Route 22 (Churchville Road) eastbound. On Route 22, pass Route 543, Thomas Run Road (on left) /Shucks Road (on right). Continue on Route 22 past the Grace Assemble of God (on right), and the Campus Hills Shopping Center (on the left). There is a gas station in front of the shopping center and a Gardiners Furniture store as part of the shopping center. UUFHC is on the right just before Ashbury Road (on right) /Rhineforte Drive (on left). If you pass these roads or if you get down to Bramble Lane, you have gone too far and need to turn around.
We will be meeting in the youth Religious Education (RE) room in the RE wing. After entering the front door, walk through the sanctuary (straight ahead) and take the rear door in back left side of the sanctuary. Walk straight back almost to the end of the hall. We will be meeting in the last room before the end of the hall on the left. Alternatively, take the door to the left before entering the sanctuary, turn right and walk down to the end of the hall, turn left at the end of the hall, and walk down the RE hall to the last room on the left.

Prof. Bart Ehrman wrote the book, God's Problem, that examines the problem of suffering and the many solutions that are offered in the Bible to explain it. He presents many quotes from the Biblical prophets, who criticize the early Jewish people for their lack of faith. The prophets threaten them with horrible retribution from God for their sins. We will play a chapter from the audiobook. Location: The Orient Restaurant, Towson. Directions: Take Baltimore Beltway exit 26 or 27 (York Road or Dulaney Valley Road) through the traffic circle to York Road, and go three blocks on the right to the Orient. Take a left to the parking garage on Chesapeake.

Everyone knows the stereotype of witches (not Wiccans) who are ugly crones who fly on broomsticks. Some of the mythology was borrowed by the Harry Potter series. But where did it come from? We will hear a lecture by Prof. Philip Daileader on the origin of the stereotypes about witchs in the Late Middle Ages. Location: The Orient Restaurant, Towson. Dr.
Cornwell will speak about the Dawkins Foundation. The mission of the
Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science is to support
scientific education, critical thinking and evidence-based
understanding of the natural world in the quest to overcome religious
fundamentalism, superstition, intolerance and human suffering. She
has recently moved to the D.C. area. Directions: The Baltimore
Ethical Society is located at 306 West Franklin Street. (Rt. 40 west)
in the heart of Baltimore between Howard and Eutaw Streets. Take
I-95 north, merge onto I-395 north via exit #53 toward Downtown,
Inner Harbor. Take Martin Luther King Blvd. exit. Turn right onto W.
Mulberry St. (US 40 East). Turn left onto Park Avenue. Turn left onto
West Franklin Street (Rt. 40 West), and proceed one block.
